If you keep your Volvo for a long time, there will come a point when it will need a new oxygen sensor. Euro Autoworks can test the factory sensor to see if it is malfunctioning. If it is, we will replace the oxygen sensor. The sensor will start to malfunction at about 100,000 miles, so if your Volvo has more mileage than that on the odometer and you notice the following problems, it’s likely you need a new oxygen sensor in your automobile.
Check Engine Warning
One of the first things that is going to happen when the oxygen sensor malfunctions is the check engine light will turn on on the dashboard. Generally, when the O2 sensor goes bad, it sends a specific code related to the malfunction to the main computer chip in your Volvo. The chip turns on the CEL.
Poor Engine Performance
Another thing you might notice is a reduction in your Volvo’s engine performance or surging in the engine performance. The O2 sensor is located in the tailpipe so it can measure the amount of oxygen in the Volvo’s exhaust. If it registers incorrect data, the main computer chip may adjust the air and fuel in the combustion chamber when it doesn’t need it. This affects the Volvo’s engine performance.
Reduce Fuel Efficiency
Any time the engine performance is inefficient is a time that your Volvo will not get the gas mileage that it normally gets. Unfortunately, you are going to see a reduction in the fuel efficiency of the Volvo. This is due to the fact that the engine is running inefficiently because it either has too much air or too much fuel in it. This is what affects the engine performance and fuel economy.
Rancid Exhaust Odors
If the main computer chip places too much fuel into the combustion chamber incorrectly, the engine is going to burn away the fuel. Consequently, this increases the hydrocarbons that the catalytic converter must treat once the exhaust is pushed into it. Unfortunately, this can reduce the lifespan of your catalytic converter and you may end up with rancid odors in your Volvo’s exhaust.
Black Exhaust Smoke
You may also end up with black exhaust coming out of the tailpipe because the catalytic converter has left the exhaust untreated. Naturally, this increases the emissions levels found in your Volvo’s exhaust and you may have a problem if you are in an area that requires emissions testing.
