Is There a Vacuum Leak in My Car’s Engine?

You will likely know if you have a vacuum leak in your Beemer or Benz’s engine. Euro Autoworks advises that the engine will give you one or more of the signs listed below. If you do have a vacuum leak, don’t worry. We are here to repair the leak no matter the make of European automobile that you drive. Let’s talk more about the signs of an engine vacuum leak below.

Component Failure

The reason why the vacuum pressure that is generated in the combustion chamber is routed in hoses throughout the engine is that it is used to power components. An example of a component powered by the engine’s vacuum is the power steering pump. If your power steering acts up, it’s possible that the pump is not receiving enough power because the vacuum hose leading to it is leaking.

Poor Engine Power

You may also notice a reduction in your European automobile’s engine power if there is a vacuum leak. This is because the vacuum leak fills the engine with air. Unfortunately, the excess air creates a lean fuel mixture in the combustion chamber that leaves your engine struggling for power because it is fuel-starved. Repairing the vacuum leak will restore your engine’s power and improve the fuel economy.

High or Erratic RPMs

You may also notice that the engine is running constantly high or that the tachometer needle is bouncing up and down. This is an indication that the vacuum leak is increasing the RPMs every time the vacuum pressure escapes from the leaking hose. Again, repairing the vacuum leak will restore the normal RPMs in your European automobile’s engine.

Odd Engine Sounds

The engine will make strange sounds if a vacuum hose is leaking. Common noises of a vacuum leak include suction sounds, squealing, and hissing. You may only hear one of the sounds. For example, if the vacuum leak is not severe, the vacuum hose may hiss as the vacuum pressure escapes.

Check Engine Warning

Finally, all of the above could be accompanied by a dashboard warning. In the case of a vacuum leak, the check engine light will turn on because one or more of the engine’s sensors reported a problem to the engine control unit. The light will stay on until you get the vacuum leak fixed.
